her condition improves

of course
she will
accept the charges
and the trouble
of who she is
why do you ask?

look at our heroine
happily burning
too close to dry brush
oblivious to the fire risk
arrow pointing somewhere
between moderate and God

her skin is fire she’ll tell you
and it’s why she can’t stop
romancing her stone
notorious for speaking
soul secrets out-of-turn
sometimes known, then not

and her pencil’s a yellow union
candle flickering in her blue closet
setting a blaze to her crappy notebook
&you can watch her wench that candle
between wrong fingers, long
–but she’ll never apologize

unequivocal,
our lady’s chest
cavity brims with errors
a dangerous harmony,
a fierce compassion,
a divine spark

swirling, like the universe
she understands not everyone
will ask for a bedtime story
[parenthetically she scribbles
not everyone supernaturally bleeds
and doesn’t die either

  1. right from the start – of course she will accept the charges …. not that is one hook – it reads one way and then slips into another line, the arrow still spinning on the compass – and it just keeps building magnetic energy right through until the end; so many great lines and images popping here – really fascinating and keeps me reading through it again and again …. a pleasure!

  2. I read this a few times. It is open to interpretation. I like the religious references and also the character you depict. I wanted to read more.

  3. Emerson wrote in “The Poet” that there are somethings that cannot be adequately said unless wildly. These are some of those things. Weirdly, the last 2 lines remind me of heroin overdosing — the only adequate high is the one that almost kills you. In poetry, that’s a tough bar, but what else are wegonnado?

  4. This one really cuts close to the bone for me, in light of all the deaths by fires I have read about both home and away.. The Joan of Arc motif is strongly felt, but I also feel every burn, literal and figurative that comprise the human condition.
    Most affecting poetry.

  5. This one gave me a hitch in my chest. WOW!

and her pencil’s a yellow union
candle flickering in her blue closet
setting a blaze to her crappy notebook
&you can watch her wench that candle
    between wrong fingers, long
    –but she’ll never apologize

    I love this so hard.
