Katie’s ghosts

to sleeping babes
beneath our feet, —

it is better to have never
made your bed to lie in it
it is better to have never
been born then,
better to have never
known scratched up earth,
her poisoned, snappy seas,

it is better to have never
pressed in to ask what is grass,
what is green?

it is better to have never
known color
for now they dream drearily how
in their stolen pieces of time
before which was called
sky, not ceiling

(oh, but i’ve dared too much)

but you, –
happy stillborn seeds,
it is better to have never
slack-mouthed, sucked dry
every scarecrow teat

there’s no sleep babes,
there’s no sleep,
but we pray you, —
beneath our feet

  1. HEAVENS. By far my favorite from this prompt. Whew. So much to love here.
    But THIS:
“it is better to have never
    known color
for now they dream drearily how
in their stolen pieces of time
    before this they called it
    the sky, not a ceiling”

Goodness. Blessed to be reading you so regularly again.

    • Yours was my favorite! So brief and sweet (plus I love all olives too… i’m eating some now in memory of your friend) ❤️

      • Oh, thank you. She was one of a kind. We still show up at random events together with a can of black olives. Bridget, my mom (and now, you) are the only other people i know on the planet who actually like them. 😉

  2. This is grief and a bit of madness… then again, grief is often like that. It leaves those who stay behind–still growing, or trying to–half broken.

  3. Amazing write…I love it all but these lines pack a real punch

it is better to have never
    slack-mouthed, sucked dry
    every scarecrow teat

    Just wow.

  4. you know my story. and so this cuts deep, me wondering what she’d be like in the sun – and now wondering, maybe it’s better she’s not. deeply impactful, Angie. ~

      • I’ve been experimenting with my seedlings this year – using the power of prayer, etc. Some really interesting results…if I ever blog again, I’ll have to write about it!

      • Yes yes! Just yesterday the power of prayer was made evident when a friend and I prayed for her daughter who was stuck in an elevator on campus for 45 minutes! But when we prayed the Doors were pried open five minutes later 😉🙏🏻💪🏼
