Turning Circles

Leave her alone, my dad would say
But mom gave it to me… Alright.
My day was coming- she would say
As a tip-off that she hoped would
Knock my one smart-aleck hip down
Beside my other, more deferent one.
But I left it alone, you know, for
Lo and behold the world kept right
On spinning at just the right speed
On its axis thingy or whatever the
Hecka pole keeps turning the earth
Around egocentrically, or is it con-
Centrically? Whatever. It turns.

  1. I love those last few lines, so tone-perfect. Also surrounded by teenagers, I recognize this “Lo and behold” and “Whatever.” *Sigh*

  2. You did such a lovely job creating a very specific voice for your narrator. Love it. Also, love this line:

Knock my one smart-aleck hip down
Beside my other, more deferent one.
