On Leaving Home

Morning’s mama bird is dutiful
Her chest is full of love
Her wings flap with experience
Her nestling secured at home
Teaching the instinctual
She coaxes the novice bird
Flying is a natural act and
We are not flightless birds
Fledgling distrusts hollow bones
And lacks real muscular power
Flying feels like drowning in water
In coughs and spits and gags
Birds of air must overcome
Learned psychological dependence
Mama understands this and allows
A few hard falls to the ground
These are the mechanics
Of flight–
Young bird
Stretches her wings
